Visitor Insurance Canada
Emergency medical coverage for family, tourists and temporary visitors
Visitors are generally responsible for their own medical and hospital costs while in Canada. Visitor insurance can help cover eligible emergency expenses caused by an unexpected illness or injury during the insured period.
Compare coverage options for your visitor's age, health history, travel dates and deductible—then get a personalized quote.
Coverage, eligibility, exclusions and waiting periods vary by insurer and policy. Policy wording governs.
Who may need visitor insurance?
Visitor insurance may be appropriate for:
- Parents or relatives visiting family in Canada
- Tourists and other short-term visitors
- Visitors extending their stay in Canada
- Temporary residents who are not covered by a provincial or territorial health plan
- Some newcomers or work permit holders who are not yet eligible or enrolled in provincial coverage
Eligibility for public health coverage depends on immigration status and province. Confirm that first so you do not buy unnecessary or overlapping coverage.
What can visitor insurance cover?
Depending on the policy, eligible emergency benefits may include:
- Physician and walk-in clinic visits
- Emergency-room treatment and hospitalization
- Diagnostic services such as blood tests, X-rays and imaging ordered for a covered emergency
- Prescription medication related to a covered emergency
- Licensed ambulance services
- Emergency dental treatment after an accident or for acute dental pain, subject to policy limits
- Repatriation or return-home assistance when medically necessary and covered
Visitor insurance is designed mainly for unforeseen emergencies. It is not a replacement for routine health care, planned treatment or a provincial health plan.
Pre-existing medical conditions
Having high blood pressure, diabetes or another medical history does not automatically mean a visitor cannot obtain insurance. Some plans may cover an eligible pre-existing condition when it meets the policy's stability requirements.
Before choosing a plan, check:
- How the policy defines a pre-existing condition
- The required stability period
- Whether the rule changes by age
- Medication, treatment and symptom changes that may affect stability
- Exclusions and benefit limits
Coverage is not automatic. The medical facts and exact policy wording determine whether a claim related to a prior condition is eligible.
Can you buy visitor insurance after arriving in Canada?
Some insurers allow a policy to be purchased after arrival. A waiting period may apply to sickness, and its length can depend on the insurer and the person's circumstances. Accident coverage may be treated differently.
Buying before arrival generally provides a clearer effective date and reduces the chance of an uninsured gap. If the visitor is already in Canada, confirm the effective date and waiting-period rules before relying on the policy.
How to choose a visitor insurance plan
Coverage amount
Consider the visitor's age, length of stay, health history and the financial impact of a serious medical event. A higher maximum provides more protection but usually costs more.
Deductible
The deductible is the amount the insured may need to pay before eligible benefits are reimbursed. A higher deductible may reduce the premium, but increases out-of-pocket responsibility during a claim.
Pre-existing-condition wording
Do not choose based only on a checkbox or product label. Compare the definition of "stable," the stability period and the exclusions.
Effective and expiry dates
Coverage dates should match the actual stay. If travel dates change, ask whether the policy can be adjusted before assuming coverage continues.
Claims and assistance process
Check whether the insurer requires contact before treatment, provides emergency assistance and supports direct billing where available. Direct billing is not guaranteed in every situation.

Get a visitor insurance quote
To prepare a quote, you will normally need:
- Date of birth
- Arrival date or requested coverage start date
- Coverage end date
- Desired coverage amount
- Deductible preference
- Whether stable pre-existing-condition coverage is needed
The quote is an estimate. Coverage begins only after the insurer accepts the application, required premium is paid and the policy is issued according to its terms.
